{"id":4862,"date":"1996-05-03T10:12:43","date_gmt":"1996-05-03T15:12:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=4862"},"modified":"2025-06-05T08:12:11","modified_gmt":"2025-06-05T13:12:11","slug":"non-yanan-1996","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/1996\/05\/03\/non-yanan-1996\/","title":{"rendered":"Non-Yan&#8217;an 1996"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#8217;t thought about it at the time, but this was the first May Term trip.\u00a0 The shift from January to May changed a number of things.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5864\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5864\" style=\"width: 361px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01677.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5864\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01677.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"361\" height=\"241\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5864\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">First May Term<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In some ways, it got harder to fill trips after 1995, when IWU overhauled its curriculum, requiring only 32 classes, and eliminating J-term.\u00a0 Student protests, however, led to a voluntary May Term, and the university put one of its most powerful leaders, Mona Gardner, in charge of it.\u00a0 Despite my fears that the May term would wither, partly because students could otherwise work that month, and partly because government funding got cut <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9487\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-1024x622.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-768x466.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-1536x932.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-2048x1243.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall2-1200x728.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 85vw, 355px\" \/>off, May term prospered, and as evidenced by the material in the blog, I enjoyed the opportunity to travel in May with students, and after those trips without them.\u00a0 However,\u00a0 May term classes were no longer required for faculty or students.\u00a0 That meant a harder sell to attract students and some <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9319 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-164x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"164\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-164x300.jpg 164w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-559x1024.jpg 559w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-768x1406.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-839x1536.jpg 839w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-1119x2048.jpg 1119w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-1200x2197.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y964-scaled.jpg 1398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 164px) 85vw, 164px\" \/>maneuvering to get to lead one of the trips, since it meant faculty taught fewer courses during the regular year.\u00a0 For me, I sometimes combined sections of classes to get the six, sometimes went as a co-leader, sometimes\u00a0 (to the annoyance of the administration), led a trip without it being part of my teaching responsibilities&#8211;i.e., taught for free.\u00a0 On occasion, I even (for the first JTerm) wound up paying for the trip myself.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01714-201x300-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5857 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01714-201x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"167\" height=\"215\" \/><\/a>I had also been a strong advocate for having two faculty on those trips, a cause abetted when an English professor had an accident and had no backup.\u00a0 That came to pass with May Term.\u00a0 I was consequently able to travel with Zhenhu Jin, Jerry Olson, Dave Willis, Jin Park, Tim Query, Ruth Ann Friedberg, Bill Walsh, Jim Sikora, and Ella Pana.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01707.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5859 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01707.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"248\" height=\"156\" \/><\/a>The co-leader for this trip was easy: Zhenhu Jin, a finance professor at IWU, who was born in Shanghai. One of<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01679.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5865\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01679.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a> our interesting\u00a0site visits was a traditional<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/23-IMG01027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4875 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/23-IMG01027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"299\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Chinese hospital, where some of us sought acupuncture.\u00a0 And I got to visit Tuan and his wife, which was a treat for me.\u00a0 And our national guide, once\u00a0again, was Mr. Li.\u00a0 We also had (the only time) an alum who expressed interest and joined us.<\/p>\n<p>Excitement came when one our students<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9318 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-286x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"286\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-286x300.jpg 286w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-976x1024.jpg 976w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-768x806.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-1464x1536.jpg 1464w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-1952x2048.jpg 1952w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y963-1200x1259.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 286px) 85vw, 286px\" \/> reported that his airline ticket and passport had been stolen.\u00a0 While our suspicion was that he had been inebriated, he still needed those documents to continue the journey.\u00a0 Fortunately, Dr. Jin and Mr. Li were able to convince the airline and the consulate to reissue the documents.\u00a0 What a predicament that could have been!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9317 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-1024x809.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-768x607.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-1536x1213.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-2048x1618.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/y962-1200x948.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>A chance visit in Nanjing was to a restaurant&#8211;in what had been the home of Chiang Kai-shek as president of China before World War II.\u00a0 He gave it to his wife, and it&#8217;s now known as Mei-ling&#8217;s palace.\u00a0 What a surprise that was!<\/p>\n<p>That year in Beijing we got to the Great Hall of the People.\u00a0 \u00a0While <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9486 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-1024x752.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-768x564.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-1536x1128.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-2048x1504.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/greathall-1200x881.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>there, Carolyn and I got our picture taken in the Shanghai Room.\u00a0 A great feeling in the Great Hall!<\/p>\n<p data-wp-editing=\"1\">The Korean part of the trip was memorable because one of our students found (most) of us lodging in a yogwan. A rich student lodged himself at a Western hotel.\u00a0 Ours was authentically Korean, with mats on the floor and condom machines.\u00a0 It was during the NBA finals, and I watched as Michael Jordan soared with one of his dunks, starting at the free <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/13-IMG01017.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4876 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/12\/13-IMG01017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a>throw line, and the Taiwanese announcer went, &#8220;Wow.&#8221;\u00a0 Perhaps there was no other<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01716-201x300-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-5860 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/IMG01716-201x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"196\" \/><\/a> word to describe it, and certainly not one in Chinese.<\/p>\n<p data-wp-editing=\"1\">And this was the group that had all the gun lighters confiscated!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reminiscences 2024 I hadn&#8217;t thought about it at the time, but this was the first May Term trip.\u00a0 The shift from January to May changed a number of things.
