{"id":4497,"date":"2012-08-02T16:17:39","date_gmt":"2012-08-02T21:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=4497"},"modified":"2025-03-12T12:09:34","modified_gmt":"2025-03-12T17:09:34","slug":"see-the-pyramids-along-the-nile","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2012\/08\/02\/see-the-pyramids-along-the-nile\/","title":{"rendered":"See the Pyramids along the Nile"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 3, 2012 Reminiscences in 2024<\/p>\n<p>I knew we were in for a different experience when we arrived in Alexandria, Egypt.\u00a0 While I would have loved to spend time in that ancient city, it would have been criminal to have skipped Cairo and the pyramids if we were in Egypt.\u00a0 Speaking of criminals, an armed escort joined our buses and escorted us to the hotel in Cairo.\u00a0 What an introduction!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/Cairo.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4627\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/Cairo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04917.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-4625 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04917.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"181\" \/><\/a>We stopped at the Saladin Citadel, built to protect the city from the Crusaders in 1176,\u00a0 but it was the seat of government for 700 years, including the reign of Mohammed Ali in the 19th century, who threw off the Ottoman yoke. Ali reconquered Egypt from the French, and founded a dynasty that ended with the overthrow of King Farouk&#8217;s son in 1953.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04966.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4619 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04966-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04942-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4621\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04942-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"226\" \/><\/a>Cairo is a city of 22 million, but it&#8217;s really third world.\u00a0 Perhaps my view was colored by the garbage strike that occurred when we were there, but we were quartered in a five star hotel in sight of the Pyramids.\u00a0 The swimming pool afforded great shots of the nearby Pyramids.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4615 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05003-150x131.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"131\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04993.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4617 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC04993-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>We also went on a Nile cruise in the city, but the true piece de resistance is of course the pyramids of Giza.\u00a0 Once the tallest buildings in the world, the Pyramids have withstood weather and looting for 4,500 years.\u00a0 Built by slave labor to house the remains of the Pharaohs, the Pyramids have over 6 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05021.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-4612 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05027.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-4611 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2012\/08\/DSC05027.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>million bricks, each about 2.5 tons each, moved without much technology.
