35th&#8211;a luxury hotel tour from Bangkok to Singapore"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While Carolyn was willing to sacrifice me in Siem Reap, she did join me in Bangkok after I survived for an anniversary tour, our 35<sup>th<\/sup>, from Bangkok to Singapore.\u00a0 The object was to swathe ourselves in luxury hotels, and learn more about these fascinating countries.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9354 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/ayuttaha-240x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" believe it was the Oriental, whose 150 years of celebrity attraction now included Fred and Carolyn Hoyt.\u00a0 Our trip included the highlights of Bangkok, especially (for me) Ayudhya and its splendid ruins.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9350 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin-1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin-1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin-1.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 85vw, 225px\" \/>We boarded a train that took us down Thailand, to Hua Hin, where we spent a night at the \u201cRailway Hotel,\u201d another on the \u201cmust stops\u201d on the tour of the peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>At the border, we were greeted by a driver, who would show us the superhighways and byways of Malaysia, a <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9351 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin1-300x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"247\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin1-300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin1-1024x845.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin1-768x633.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/huahin1.jpg 1067w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>country whose mix of<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>progressive Islam and Chinese cultures made it one of the most enjoyable discoveries for me of Southeast Asia.\u00a0 It was a great start that our first stop was in Pulau Penang, one of the cities that I\u2019d \u201cdiscovered\u201d with David as\u00a0 primarily Chinese (the Straits Settlements) dominant.\u00a0 The area housed one of the extensive business hubs on the country, and I would soon get to visit Dell and other operations attracted by low wages, a favorable business environment, and an educated work force.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9242 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/Penang-Pool-Eastern-Oriental-Penang-750x500-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/Penang-Pool-Eastern-Oriental-Penang-750x500-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/Penang-Pool-Eastern-Oriental-Penang-750x500-1.jpg 750w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>Not coincidentally, our arrival coincided with the reopening of the refurbished Sarkie Brothers Hotel, the Eastern and Oriental, on the Gulf of Thailand.\u00a0 I could sit there dreamily considering retiring to a bungalow facing the Gulf with my xiao lao po.<\/p>\n<p>The trip took us via superhighway to one of the inland cities, I think Ipoh<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9231 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-300x185.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-300x185.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-1024x632.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-768x474.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-1536x948.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-2048x1263.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/malacca-1200x740.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>, a city whose charm (i.e., history and appearance) resembles George Town (Penang).\u00a0 Small shops, Chinese influence.<\/p>\n<p>The trip continued through Malacca and Kuala Lumpur, with a visit I remember to a rubber plantation, where our Hindu guide\u2019s grandfather had worked as a cook.\u00a0\u00a0 Typical British mix of Chinese, Malay and Indian.\u00a0 He also told us when he married a Malay, he had to raise his children as Muslim.<\/p>\n<p data-wp-editing=\"1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-9229\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/raffle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/>The crown jewel in this nostalgia trip to the past, of course, was an overnight or two at the Raffles Hotel in Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>Imitating the rich and famous is certainly fun, but I\u2019ll get Carolyn to Siem Reap in the future!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While
