was filmed, and I wouldn&#8217;t be surprised if that&#8217;s where we stayed.<\/p>\n<p>Talk about &#8220;customer service.&#8221;\u00a0 With kimonos in our room, we were transported back in time to greater luxury and ambience.\u00a0 One evening, three meals, two treasures the cost, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9608 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-2048x1368.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto5-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>and worth it. Ryokan is the category.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/IMG00143-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2517\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/IMG00143-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>If the city resembles a Tang dynasty capital&#8211;Chang&#8217;an (Xi&#8217;an) or Luoyang, it&#8217;s no accident. the &#8220;peaceful capital&#8221; (Heian) was modeled after those imperial cities.\u00a0 Isn&#8217;t that what it meant to be an emperor in Asia, even in the land where the sun comes up? (Nihon).<\/p>\n<p>Nara provided an 80-year prelude as the first capital of Japan, which later moved to Kyoto where it remained for a thousand years.\u00a0 Again, I felt we were in Tang China, which provided the feng shui for the layout of the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/Todai-ji_Kon-do.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-2518\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/Todai-ji_Kon-do.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"160\" \/><\/a>city. It still houses 8 UNESCO heritage sites, but one of the unusual features is the deer park, which ecompasses the temples and shrines.\u00a0 It also protects the tiny deer.<\/p>\n<p>The Todaji temple is the<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9609 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-1026x1536.jpg 1026w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-1368x2048.jpg 1368w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-1200x1797.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto6-scaled.jpg 1710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 85vw, 200px\" \/>\u00a0world&#8217;s largest wooden building. Fittingly, Kyoto&#8217;s\u00a0 sister cities include Xi&#8217;an and Kyongju.<\/p>\n<p>As part of our tour of Tang China&#8217;s imitators, I wanted to take Carolyn to Kyongju, at one time the fourth largest city in the world. It was the capital of the Silla Kingdom from 57 BC until 935 AD.\u00a0 I&#8217;d been to the &#8220;museum without walls,&#8221; but couldn&#8217;t get enough of its ancient splendor.\u00a0 The peak was the 7-9th century when the Silla ruled most of the Korean peninsula.<\/p>\n<p>Today, historic buildings such as the Bulguksa (Buddhist) temple, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9612 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-182x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"182\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-182x300.jpg 182w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-622x1024.jpg 622w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-768x1265.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-932x1536.jpg 932w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-1243x2048.jpg 1243w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-1200x1977.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto9-scaled.jpg 1554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 182px) 85vw, 182px\" \/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9618 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"254\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-2048x1368.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2000\/06\/kyoto10-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 254px) 85vw, 254px\" \/>the observatory, the bell, and the mostly un-excavated mounds evoke a splendid past.\u00a0 The museum has some artifacts, too.<\/p>\n<p>The Buddha in the cave <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/05\/Front_view_of_Seokguram_from_front_chamber.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3491 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2008\/05\/Front_view_of_Seokguram_from_front_chamber.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"237\" height=\"172\" \/><\/a>(Seokguram) is the most beautiful buddha I have ever seen.<\/p>\n<p>The one disappointment I had was that when I had been in Korea in 1997, it was during the cherry blossom time. Gumi, our base then, was resplendent white.\u00a0 When Carolyn and I went through it on the train to Kyongju, all we saw was a naked industrial city.<\/p>\n<p>To her great surprise,\u00a0 Carolyn enjoyed the food, even the seafood.
