I remember the beds being very short, the rooms small, and the inside of the <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-8250\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/IMG00818.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"233\" \/>hotel very beautiful. The old-style phone booths were a hit!<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">London was always a highlight, and we reached there in time for a parade celebrating the Queen&#8217;s opening of Parliament.\u202f The Brits certainly know ceremony, but it&#8217;s always instructive to see machine guns on<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8648 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2001\/07\/e99a8a21-6930-4065-9e22-bf02ffa8d9c4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">18th century uniforms, a reminder of the problems of security in the contemporary world.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">*<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Buckingham Palace was extraordinary!\u00a0\u00a0Olga,\u00a0our guide for this one, showed us around. We were there also in time to watch the changing of the guards. We saw Westminster Abbey and where Prince Charles and William and Harry stay while in London. St. James Palace, where Prince Charles and Princess Diana were married was also on \u00a0our itinerary! Next, we visited the Tower of London where lots of Medieval torture devices, and the Crown Jewels, were on display. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the site visit highlights was to Harrods&#8217;s, world-famous department store, where I think I bought place card settings. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Inside of Harrod\u2019s was a display of Princess Di and Dodi. His father owns Harrod\u2019s. We also visited Shakesperean Theatre where we saw all his plays in a 90- minute comedic performance. We saw Big Ben from a distance and a statue of George Washington in London. Maybe the most memorable of our London experiences was celebrating Arsenal\u2019s win over Manchester! The street riots and parties were so much fun! The inside of the Cathedral was incredible. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">At the church of St. Denis were the graves of former French kings, which I had not seen before.\u202f<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">We also saw the Arc de Triumphe and we were able to go all the way to the top of the Eifel Tower.\u00a0 We also went on a boat tour of Paris at night. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The business visit was to the Galleries Lafayette, a <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\"> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8695 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/25train-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/25train-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/25train.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">major departm<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ent store in the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">mode of retail palaces of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The ceilings were spectacular!\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The overnight train<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> to Berlin was my first stab into going East.\u202f I remember asking the border guards for a\u202fpassport stamp without success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f*<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Our hotel in Berlin was by far our favorite. It was huge! I remember the German mall we went to was amazing. Though that city had been bombed to smithereens in World War II, the opera house (one of Wagner&#8217;s favorites) had been rebuilt, and parts of the old city remained. <\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> Old Bratislava<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559738&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">From there, it was an easy ride to Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, with a charming old town.\u202f I <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8245\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/IMG00803.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"173\" \/>had never heard of Bratislava, because it historically was Pressburg, where the Hungarian monarchs were crowned.\u202f We stopped at a building that commemorated the victories Napoleon won at Austerlitz, certified in the Treaty of Pressburg. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">While there, you could see Austria in the distance.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8907 size-thumbnail alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/Doc-Apr-16-2025-1-18-PM-p5-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>And of course, Prague is memorable as an example of what Europe could have been like without World Wars, at least the buildings.\u202f Hitler spared the city as a museum, while he gassed its inhabitants. The old areas&#8211;the Charles Bridge, the palace, the former synagogues with the roll call of Holocaust victims&#8230; \u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">In Prague, we saw many old historical buildings, Liz reported. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-8696 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/71prague-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/71prague-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2002\/05\/71prague.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>*I just remember it being such a beautiful city and wanted to return one day. We hiked up to Prague Castle and saw incredible views from the top, especially at night. There were many houses that \u201cshorter\u201d soldiers fit in, and I have a great picture of Professor Hoyt fitting right in the doorway. We saw the American Embassy in Prague and listened to retired, rich men that would play music in the square every day. Prague Castle Square was neat, and we learned a couple is buried inside the castle. We ate at a traditional Prague restaurant and performers danced while we ate!
