In fact, one of my fondest memories of Michael Jordan was watching a finals game in a yogwan in Korea (a room with a condom dispenser). Mornings in Qingdao definitely required joining in dancing on the squares in front of the Bavarian style Catholic Church.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9556 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-300x182.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"182\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-1024x620.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-768x465.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-1536x930.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-2048x1240.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan2-1200x726.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>I also remember asking Feng Hong to stop at one point so I could take pictures of a harvesting team of machinery that was the most mechanized agriculture I had ever seen in China. Combines in China. A first.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/09\/IMG00111-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2096 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/09\/IMG00111-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"187\" \/><\/a>One other stop was a note worthy: Qu&#8217;fu, the home of the Great Sage, Confucius.\u00a0 The main shrine was massive, a paean to the importance (reemphasized in contemporary <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9557 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-229x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"229\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-229x300.jpg 229w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-780x1024.jpg 780w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-768x1008.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-1170x1536.jpg 1170w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-1560x2048.jpg 1560w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-1200x1575.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan3-scaled.jpg 1950w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 229px) 85vw, 229px\" \/>China) of a philosopher who encouraged order and obedience.\u00a0 The Confucian exams for centuries defined winners and losers in the civil service, and remnants of the rote learning it required are still embedded in China&#8217;s educational system.\u00a0 Qu&#8217;fu was one of the few places in China I saw stars and heard birds (not in cages).\u00a0 It was tranquil, in other words.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9554 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-1026x1536.jpg 1026w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-1368x2048.jpg 1368w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-1200x1797.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan-scaled.jpg 1710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 85vw, 200px\" \/>The literal highlight of course was Tai Shan, one of the most sacred mountains in China.\u00a0 It\u2019s where Mao said, \u201cThe East is Red,\u201d but Confucius sagely remarked, \u201cThe Earth is small.\u201d\u00a0 I stayed in a Chinese-speaking<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9555 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-226x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-226x300.jpg 226w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-772x1024.jpg 772w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-768x1019.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-1157x1536.jpg 1157w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-1543x2048.jpg 1543w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-1200x1592.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/1996\/05\/taishan1-scaled.jpg 1929w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 85vw, 226px\" \/>\u00a0guesthouse.\u00a0 At an ungodly hour, the phone rang and a voice announced (my translation\u2014get up and get dressed, daybreak is coming).\u00a0 There was a PLA topcoat in the closet to protect me from the mountain chill;
