{"id":1949,"date":"2024-08-18T14:33:04","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T19:33:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=1949"},"modified":"2025-03-19T11:42:56","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T16:42:56","slug":"red-wing-shoes-and-wabasha-grumpy-eagles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2024\/08\/18\/red-wing-shoes-and-wabasha-grumpy-eagles\/","title":{"rendered":"Red Wing shoes and Wabasha grumpy eagles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>August 18, 2024<br \/>\nPleasant surprise yesterday when we learned we&#8217;d board ship in St. Paul and cruise south to Red Wing, still home to some of the town&#8217;s famous Red Wing shoes, which had helped the US Army in WW II.\u00a0 The river level had dropped enough for the cruise ship to pass under bridges on its way to St. Paul.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC04999.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-8871 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC04999-150x133.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/miss.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/miss.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>Red Wing was once the wheat capital of US, but now gathers and distributes corn and soybeans. The Historical Society visit featured a peek in the archives which took me back to my history days. Town claims to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8878 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611-300x135.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611-300x135.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611-1024x462.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611-768x346.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611-1200x541.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/20240818_102611.jpg 1360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>have been birthplace of ski jumping, but fortunately there was no snow so I wasn&#8217;t tempted. Great pottery museum.<\/p>\n<p>From there we went along the river to Wabasha, home of grumpy old men and the National Eagle center. Four <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC05001-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8870 size-full alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2024\/08\/DSC05001-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>kind of Eagles were named&#8211;sea\/fish, booted, forest,serpent. I wanted to add a fifth, bsa. Wabasha is the start of a wildlife refuge that extends to Rock Island.
