The<\/p>\n<p>historical relics (Bagan especially) reflect a powerful nation frequently at war with its neighbors. The country is Buddhist (we spent two hours in a Buddhist monastery whose claim to fame is that it has jumping cats remaining out of the heavy rain&#8211;we are almost in the monsoons, <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9284 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-684x1024.jpg 684w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-768x1150.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-1026x1536.jpg 1026w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-1368x2048.jpg 1368w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-1200x1797.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma8-scaled.jpg 1710w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 85vw, 200px\" \/>and the barometer was 26&#8243;).<\/p>\n<p>2) We spent the next three days in the Shan States, the largest non-Myanmar ethnic majority, exploring some history, but more the ethnographical aspects. We were on a lake 20 miles long where people grow crops on floating masses, anchored by bamboo.<\/p>\n<p>3) The country is 75% or more agricultur<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/IMG01066-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-2112 \" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/IMG01066-125x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"192\" \/><\/a>al. When you are at the Jensen place think about mechanized agriculture&#8211;we saw water buffalo and oxen. One picture in my mind is of an oxcart <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9280 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-300x192.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-300x192.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-1024x656.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-768x492.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-1536x984.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-2048x1313.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma4-1200x769.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>bringing cabbage to the truck taking it to Mandalay.<\/p>\n<p>4) China is not just our outsource for manufacturing; it is theirs too. The road to China (of the Burma Road fame) is open, and we stopped at a small village to see what was for sale. We saw many of the same products we saw in China; even the silk they use for textiles here comes as yarn from China.<\/p>\n<p>5) They are power strapped. In Mandalay, our guide had electricity only <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9282 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-1024x684.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-768x513.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-1536x1026.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-2048x1368.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2004\/06\/burma6-1200x801.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/>from 2 p.m. to 7 a.m.&#8212;and she was lucky because she knew when they&#8217;d stop power on her. Our power went off periodically. Phone to the US (when available) is $8 a minute; email is censored and we could not get our titan account. Imagine trying to do business under these conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Well, I do have to pack for the ordeal. Tomorrow is an hour flight, but in and out of two countries. Then Friday we begin the longest day&#8211;looking forward to visiting with you on Monday at the PLC meeting.
