{"id":1624,"date":"2017-08-13T10:15:58","date_gmt":"2017-08-13T15:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=1624"},"modified":"2025-03-03T19:46:15","modified_gmt":"2025-03-04T01:46:15","slug":"pompeii-the-ultimate-melting-pot","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2017\/08\/13\/pompeii-the-ultimate-melting-pot\/","title":{"rendered":"Pompeii The Ultimate Melting Pot"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ultimate melting pot\u2014Pompeii<\/p>\n<p>August 13, 2017<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve spent the three days in the shadow of Papa Vesuvius, along the Amalfi Coast, one of the most scenic parts of Italy.\u00a0 Two days were in Salerno, where the highlights were the Greco-Roman ruins discovered in the 18<sup>th<\/sup> century when Carlos VII, a Bourbon, was King of the Two Sicilies and interested in antiquities.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve already written about Paestum, but the next day we went to a more <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05714-1-rotated.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05714-1-rotated.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"125\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05774-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3724\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05774-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"146\" \/><\/a>spectacular discovery\u2014Pompeii, literally a \u201cmelting pot.\u201d\u00a0 The eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August 24, 79 AD created one of the most well-known archaeological sites\u2014Pompeii.\u00a0 Over two days, a city that once housed 26,000 people got buried, to be rediscovered almost 1600 years later.<\/p>\n<p>In two hours, we barely scratched the surface, but we did see the major public buildings including the forum, the center of any Roman city, <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05765-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-3725\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05765-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05708.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3719\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05708.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"100\" \/><\/a>the market (with a stand that measured weights), the local happy house (there were six in the city), the walls that enclosed it, and so forth.\u00a0 I was a little disappointed to realize<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3723\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3723\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05782-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3723\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05782-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3723\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Potty break in Pompei<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3733\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3733\" style=\"width: 223px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05738.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3733\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/DSC05738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"148\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Happy house manual<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>that much of the artwork got taken to the museum in Naples that we are not visiting, but there was enough to help the 2.5 million tourists who visit the site get a real feel for Roman civilization.\u00a0 I was interested in the temples devoted to Augustus (as well as Jupiter and the other traditional gods), because he was recently declared emperor, and began the tradition of emperor king.\u00a0 We also saw the kind of \u201cHome Depot\u201d store, which housed amphoras and other items of everyday life, and had several casts of the dead, including a dog, that died in the \u201cmelting pot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/salerno-cathedral-campania-italy-20_orig.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-3721\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/salerno-cathedral-campania-italy-20_orig.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"154\" \/><\/a> We had enough time when we got back for me to take Carolyn to the St. Matthews Cathedral, which is another site not to be missed.\u00a0 She noted it was bright inside, but that\u2019s due in part to its origins in the 11<sup>th<\/sup> century, with a huge iron gate cast in Constantinople; I was also impressed with the Arab-Norman cloister, as I mentioned.\u00a0 In addition, one of the chapels in the church is called the \u201cchapel of the Crusaders,\u201d who <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/duomodisalerno3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7353 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/duomodisalerno3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"242\" height=\"161\" \/><\/a>stopped there to have their weapons blessed before embarking on the Crusades.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve not been too worried about Vesuvius (though with 2 million people living in Naples, its next explosion could certainly make Pompeii seem small), but our captain has been sensitive to the winds that escaped from the Aeolian Islands.\u00a0 Rough seas postponed our departure from Salerno, and we took a short bus ride to Vietri, the entrance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/640px-Casa_del_poeta_tragico_mosaico_del_cave_canem.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7355 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2017\/08\/640px-Casa_del_poeta_tragico_mosaico_del_cave_canem.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"253\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a>Amalfi Coast.\u00a0 A small town, it\u2019s best known for its ceramics, which cover the dome of the parish church, and call out from half the shops in town for a stop and look.\u00a0 I found a trivet that copies the famous Pompeii sign \u201cBeware of Dog\u201d (Cave Canem) that greatly delighted Carolyn.\u00a0 It will certainly find a place in our kitchen!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The ultimate melting pot\u2014Pompeii August 13, 2017 We\u2019ve spent the three days in the shadow of Papa Vesuvius, along the Amalfi Coast, one of the most scenic parts of Italy.\u00a0 Two days were in Salerno, where the highlights were the Greco-Roman ruins discovered in the 18th century when Carlos VII, a Bourbon, was King of &hellip;
