{"id":1181,"date":"2013-05-11T08:13:20","date_gmt":"2013-05-11T13:13:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/?p=1181"},"modified":"2025-06-04T15:56:31","modified_gmt":"2025-06-04T20:56:31","slug":"in-the-land-of-the-sun-king","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/2013\/05\/11\/in-the-land-of-the-sun-king\/","title":{"rendered":"In the Land of the Sun King"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone wanted to be the Paris of the\u2026.<\/p>\n<p>Many of the cities I\u2019ve visited have sought to be compared to Paris\u2014Saigon was thought to be the Paris of the East by many (and it still has the greatest baguettes East of Suez); and Shanghai, particularly the French Concession, had similar marketing claims.\u00a0\u00a0In Europe, several Eastern European cities\u2014<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-9438 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-250x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-250x300.jpg 250w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-853x1024.jpg 853w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-768x922.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-1280x1536.jpg 1280w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-1706x2048.jpg 1706w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/07-DSC06878-1200x1441.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 85vw, 250px\" \/>Budapest and Lvov come to mind&#8211;sought to mimic the leafy boulevards, the wide streets, the victory monuments, and the 6 story buildings with the mansard roofs (go to the Art Institute and see the Impressionist section and you\u2019ll see why Paris caught the fancy of urban planners and urbanites in the 19<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6403\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6403\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/luxgardens.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6403 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/luxgardens.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"166\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6403\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Garden of Luxembourg<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Being back for the first time in over a decade reminded me of the envy Paris elicited, and being here, I can understand why.\u00a0\u00a0We came from London on the Eurostar, the fast track (literally) train that averages over 120 miles an hour and, we were told, hits up to 180.\u00a0\u00a0We came from Saint Pancras station, whose exterior you might recognize from Harry Potter, to Gare du Nord, the train station that is the exit\/entrance of railroads from the north, including the one we will be taking to Brussels later in the week.<\/p>\n<p>We spent around 4 hours driving around the city rebuilt in the aftermath of the bitter Commune struggle (1871) by Baron Haussmann to surround the foundation laid especially by the great warrior King, Louis XIV,\u00a0\u00a0the Sun<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06868.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-6402 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06868.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"248\" \/><\/a> King, whose 60 years or so marked in many ways the zenith of French power in and over Europe, and his martial successor a century later, Napoleon, whose Arc de Triomphe revealed his respect for ancient Rome and an enormous ego.\u00a0\u00a0I hadn\u2019t made the connection, but the city along the Seine, and especially the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06888.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6408 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06888-239x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"239\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06888-239x300.jpg 239w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/factrack\/files\/2013\/05\/DSC06888.jpg 299w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 239px) 85vw, 239px\" \/><\/a> palaces, the Louvre, and the Luxembourg etc., strongly resemble the palaces Peter the Great constructed along the Neva River in St. Petersburg. Peter in fact visited France in 1717, and the efforts to duplicate Versailles (especially in\u00a0\u00a0the Peterhof palace) are much greater than I remembered.\u00a0\u00a0(see later)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Everyone wanted to be the Paris of the\u2026.
