I did the third question for the homework about Bernstein and “meaningful engagement”. I think his views on art, namely poetry, being an important factor in making moral decisions is valid. However, I definitely don’t think that for a poem to be engaging it has to be dense and difficult to at first understand. The beauty and engagement of a poem sometimes has nothing to do with a message. If people can’t understand what a poem is about the first time through they might not go back and try to understand. The message of that poem is completely lost on that individual then. Overall I think he was right in saying that art contains important messages and is a good way to “question social norms” but it doesn’t always have to be resistant to be engaging
