I did the third question for the homework, and I completely disagree with Bernstein. I think that in order for a poem to be engaged, it does not mean that it has to be difficult to understand or complex. Granted, it can help if people have to think more to understand it, but I think that engagement is dependent on the reader. Some readers like to be challenged and that helps them be engaged, but others like to understand and read things that they can relate to instead of something that is going to make them think. In my opinion, engagement is dependent on the reader, not necessarily the poem in some cases.
