Applications Open for 2020 Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists

Each year, five fellowships are awarded to meritorious students to work full-time on campus over the summer as scholars and artists under the supervision of a faculty member. Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists receive a stipend and complimentary on-campus housing.

This program is designed to support the development of a student’s scholarly or artistic project through an extended and focused effort of academic mentoring, and to support proposals representing the breadth of scholarly and artistic study at Illinois Wesleyan. The proposed project can include guided research that is related to the faculty sponsor’s research agenda, but it should not be limited to simply assisting with one of the sponsor’s own projects. Proposals for projects evolving from course work must clearly articulate how the project is being developed beyond the restrictions of the course agenda.  Projects selected for support through the Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists program will deepen research and creative competencies for the fellows, and help them to prepare for pre-professional or graduate schools as well as future employment.

More information on the Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists Program is available here. Application materials for 2020 fellowships are due no later than 4:30 pm on Friday, January 31st.

The Eckley Summer Scholars and Artists Program is part of the IWU undergraduate research initiative, and is managed by the Office of the Associate Provost and the Undergraduate Research Advisory Committee.

Engaging Scholarship: Data Literacy and Service Learning in Undergraduate Research

Diego Mendez-Carbajo (Economics) and Stephanie Davis-Kahl (Ames Library) have co-authored a new article reporting the results of their study of undergraduate research projects in the field of Economics in Scholarship and Practice in Undergraduate Research. This study of 85 “capstone-level research projects” completed between 2012 – 2014 demonstrated that undergraduate research projects “with a community service focus displayed a stronger mastery by students of particular expected proficiencies … [than those with a traditional focus].”

The Center for Engaged Learning promotes student and faculty engagement in high-impact practices including community engagement, service learning, and undergraduate research, as well as opportunities to bring these initiatives together in a meaningful way across the IWU community.
