\"POWRR<\/a><\/div>\n
The Digital POWRR Project (Preserving digital Objects With Restricted Resources), is a multi-institutional, IMLS National Leadership Grant project that\u00a0has been working in\u00a0the field of\u00a0digital preservation (DP)\u00a0since 2012. Its focus has been\u00a0on investigating scalable DP solutions for small and mid-sized institutions that are often faced with small staff sizes, restricted IT infrastructures, and tight budgets. These institutions\u00a0hold\u00a0unique digital content important to their region’s cultural heritage,\u00a0yet many of the practitioners are unsure how to approach the stewardship of the content and are\u00a0overwhelmed by the large number of DP tools\/services available.\u00a0As the project progressed,\u00a0the team\u00a0uncovered the particular challenges, advantages, needs, and desires of\u00a0under-resourced\u00a0institutions. They worked to address and overcome obstacles that often prevent practitioners from taking even\u00a0initial steps in preserving their digital content. POWRR\u00a0sought\u00a0to\u00a0create a well-marked, realistic path towards sustainable digital stewardship for this often overlooked\u00a0group.\u00a0For example,<\/div>\n

\"tool_grid\"<\/a><\/div>\n
– The team\u00a0delivered a well-received, graphic-based tool grid<\/a> that shows, at-a-glance, the functionalities of over 60 DP tools and services and how they fit within an OAIS-based digital curation lifecycle.<\/div>\n
–\u00a0POWRR successfully\u00a0petitioned\u00a0select DP-solution vendors\u00a0for\u00a0scaled-down and\u00a0transparent\u00a0pricing geared towards smaller institutions.<\/div>\n
– The team\u00a0created materials<\/a> to aid practitioners as they attempt to build awareness around the\u00a0need for\u00a0a DP program\u00a0and advocate for the necessary resources.<\/div>\n
– They\u00a0developed a pragmatic, hands-on workshop<\/a> to teach\u00a0the initial\u00a0steps necessary\u00a0to\u00a0accession and inventory\u00a0digital content as well as how to realistically approach developing a DP program. Recognizing that many of their target institutions currently have little-to-no travel and training budgets, the POWRR team is traveling across the country to conduct these workshops for very little cost to the practitioners.<\/div>\n
– Because institutions can achieve economies of scale by\u00a0working together (not to mention the\u00a0value of the “we’re all in this together” approach!),\u00a0POWRR is producing collaboration models and the underlying legal framework\u00a0often needed for these endeavors…all directed at small and mid-sized institutions.<\/div>\n
– Most recently, POWRR released their White Paper, From Theory to Action: Good Enough Digital Preservation for Under-Resourced Cultural Heritage Institutions<\/a>. <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
