The very first campus Kwanza event at Illinois Wesleyan University was held on <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/u?\/iwu_argus,4410\">December 10<sup>th<\/sup>, 1996<\/a>, thirty years after its creation. The event was run by the combined efforts of Monica Taylor, the multicultural affairs director at the time, and the Black Student Union, and is now an annual tradition.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_922\" style=\"width: 232px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2015\/05\/1998-Kwanzaa-Karenga.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-922\" class=\"wp-image-922 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2015\/05\/1998-Kwanzaa-Karenga-222x300.jpg\" alt=\"1998 Kwanzaa Karenga\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2015\/05\/1998-Kwanzaa-Karenga-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2015\/05\/1998-Kwanzaa-Karenga-759x1024.jpg 759w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2015\/05\/1998-Kwanzaa-Karenga.jpg 1604w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-922\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">IWU Argus December 4, 1998<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Kwanzaa is a week long African American harvest celebration created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga, who was a professor of African studies at California State Univeristy. Illinois Wesleyan was fortunate enough to have <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/u?\/iwu_argus,3706\">Karenga visit its campus in 1998<\/a>, where he presented his speech, \u201cThe Principles and Practice of Kwanzaa: Harvesting and Sharing the Good.\u201d After this speech, Karenga and seven IWU students performed the ritual of the lighting of the Mishumaa.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe mission of human life is to constantly bring good into the world.\u201d \u2013 Maulana Karenga 1998<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While the actual event occurs from December 26<sup>th<\/sup> until January 1<sup>st<\/sup>, IWU celebrates it in early December, so the students can celebrate it together on campus. The event includes singing, dancing, drum performances, as well as a feast of traditional Kwanzaa cuisine, such as catfish, chicken wings, black-eyed peas, and Joliffe rice. There is also a speech given about the seven principles of Kwanzaa; unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
