The first time was in 1961 for an event sponsored by the Religious Activities Commission. Articles in <em><a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_argus\/id\/13660\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Argus <\/a><\/em>and <em><a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_yearb\/id\/6583\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wesleyana<\/a> <\/em>offer details. In a Letter to the Editor published a week after King&#8217;s assassination, IWU alumna Sara Ellen Long recalled her role in the 1961 group that invited King (<a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_argus\/id\/11222\">April 12, p. 2<\/a>).<em><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1312\" style=\"width: 151px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/01\/p1-for-1961-Religious-Emphasis-Banquet-program.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1312\" class=\"wp-image-1312\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/01\/p1-for-1961-Religious-Emphasis-Banquet-program-194x300.jpg\" alt=\"Religious Emphasis Banquet program\" width=\"141\" height=\"214\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1312\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">program for the event Dr. King spoke at in 1961<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The University Archives received a special copy of the program for this event just a few years ago. This event took place after Dr. King was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize and was held at the Fred Young Fieldhouse to accommodate the crowd. IWU student Elizabeth Lindblom was Chair of the Commission and provided an introduction to the event.<\/p>\n<p>Other photos from the <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/search\/collection\/iwu_histph\/searchterm\/martin%20luther%20king%2C%20jr.!1961-02-14\/field\/all!date\/mode\/exact!all\/conn\/and!and\/order\/nosort\/ad\/asc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1961<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/search\/collection\/iwu_histph\/searchterm\/martin%20luther%20king%2C%20jr.!1966-02-10\/field\/all!date\/mode\/exact!all\/conn\/and!and\/order\/nosort\/ad\/asc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">1966<\/a> visits are also available. Alumni shared their reflections on these visits during a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gf-7vs1ex3o&amp;t=109s&amp;list=PLiP9aNdnuG5VpJE-LvJntEyOTq1ZMhCBN&amp;index=34\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">panel on the topic<\/a> at Homecoming 2016.<\/p>\n<p>University Communications maintains a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/mlk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">series of web pages<\/a> with a transcript of the 1966 event and a <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/il_wesleyan\/dr-martin-luther-king-jr-at-illinois-wesleyan-university-1966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">link to a recording<\/a> of a broadcast from local radio station WJBC.
