The atlas is large&#8211;approximately 2&#8242; wide when open&#8211;and has many colored maps, created by the ever-authoritative US Geological Survey.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1287 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/western-pt-of-plateau-167x300.png\" alt=\"western-pt-of-plateau\" width=\"167\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/western-pt-of-plateau-167x300.png 167w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/western-pt-of-plateau.png 418w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 167px) 100vw, 167px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A few other maps on display are &#8220;real&#8221; renditions (we can and should debate the depiction of reality in any author&#8217;s work), intended for serious illustration of travel narratives like<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1301\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1301\" class=\"wp-image-1301 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/birbek_notes-300x222.png\" alt=\"birbeck_notes\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/birbek_notes-300x222.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/birbek_notes-405x300.png 405w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/birbek_notes.png 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This foldout map in Birbeck&#8217;s 1818 &#8220;Notes on a Journey&#8230;&#8221; is separated at the top fold but complete.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Morris Birbeck&#8217;s 1818 <a class=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-iwu\/Record\/iwu_25250\">Notes on a Journey in America, from the Coast of Virginia to the Territory of Illinois<\/a>, or in educationally-minded works like Thomas Harrington&#8217;s 1773 <a class=\"title\" href=\"https:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-iwu\/Record\/iwu_244516\">A New Introduction to the Knowledge and Use of M<span class=\"highlight\">aps<\/span><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The latter volume is from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/library\/services\/Documents\/book_arts.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Book Arts Collection<\/a> part of Special Collections that celebrates the artistry used in making books, not for art&#8217;s sake but for many elements of the craft that are almost incidental to what we understand of the purpose for books today.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1289 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/AtoZ-300x229.jpg\" alt=\"atoz\" width=\"300\" height=\"229\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/AtoZ-300x229.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/AtoZ-394x300.jpg 394w, https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2016\/12\/AtoZ.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Others in the exhibit are intentionally imagined landscapes, used to navigate a story, as in <a href=\"https:\/\/vufind.carli.illinois.edu\/vf-iwu\/Record\/iwu_337657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Lars Arrhenius&#8217;s A-Z<\/a>. Interestingly enough, the book had its origin in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.peeruk.org\/template-38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">large-scale exhibition<\/a>.
