Edgar&#8217;s watch<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The granddaughter of Reverend John Perry Edgar, Class of 1893, gave the university his watch and an inscription in that gift led me to an interesting finding. The inscription reads &#8220;Presented by Edgar Club, IWU, 1893.&#8221; The owner of the watch was the Club&#8217;s founder and its purpose was to provide students with room and board.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1343\" style=\"width: 158px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/03\/1893-06-01_Wes-Echo_p6.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1343\" class=\"wp-image-1343\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/03\/1893-06-01_Wes-Echo_p6-207x300.jpg\" alt=\"John Perry Edgar, Class of 1893\" width=\"148\" height=\"209\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1343\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">John Perry Edgar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>An <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_argus\/id\/36453\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">article describing the Club<\/a> says it was formed in 1889 with 22 men enrolled as members. In 1891 the group held a &#8220;unanimous vote that ladies be admitted.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This seems shocking, at first glance. Men and women boarding together in the 19th century? The details with regard to the descriptions provided by the clubs seem ambiguous but the <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_catalog\/id\/3111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1895 IWU Catalogue of Courses<\/a> is quite clear:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1348\" style=\"width: 430px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/03\/1895Cat_p74_cropped.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1348\" class=\"wp-image-1348\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/asc\/files\/2017\/03\/1895Cat_p74_cropped-300x63.jpg\" alt=\"1895 Boarding description\" width=\"420\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1348\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">1895 Boarding description<\/p><\/div>\n<p>With the closure of Henrietta Hall,* rooming took place in private homes of &#8220;suitable&#8221; families but boarding with clubs continued for at least a few years after Edgar left and two (<a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_yearb\/id\/18205\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bundy<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_yearb\/id\/18207\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ross<\/a>) credited him as the originator of the idea.<\/p>\n<p>But back to the watch&#8230;it still keeps time well and both covers are etched but worn down with use. Still, the designs are visible: on one side are the initials JPE and on the other is a building. In this enlarged and enhanced image, it looks like <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_histph\/id\/290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old North<\/a>, which was built in 1856 and so was the first building on our campus. Edgar would also have had classes in <a href=\"http:\/\/collections.carli.illinois.edu\/cdm\/ref\/collection\/iwu_histph\/id\/297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Old Main<\/a>, erected in 1870. That was known as &#8220;Southwest Hall&#8221; and was operated by the Women&#8217;s Guild of IWU until it became a co-ed dorm&#8211;IWU&#8217;s first&#8211;in 1976.
