Alfred O. Coffin, Ph.D., 1889

In 1889 Alfred O. Coffin became the first African-American in the U.S. to earn a Ph.D. in Biology. At the time he was enrolled here he lived in Texas. He earned his degree through our Non-resident’s program. Part of the hebrarium he created for this work is held in the University’s archives.
