Project Title: “Sprouting Healthy Spuds: A Program on Nutrition and Healthy Eating for Children”

Project Summary: Starting a youth nutrition program in the West Side of Bloomington will directly help the children that need it most. Children cannot be expected to eat healthy and choose more nutritional options when they lack the education and resources to do so. Furthermore, it is the hope that the information and insight gained through this program will not only remain active in their school environment, but it will also penetrate the realm of their home environment, further reinforcing the importance of healthy eating…If we provide the youth with a solid foundation for healthy-eating and living, the knowledge could span generations, ultimately benefiting the entire community in due time.

Note from Laura and Jillian: Do not be afraid if things are not working out at first. We went through several different people before landing on Milestones and Dana David. The Action Research Center, your classmates, professors, and so many others have a great deal of social capital to share with you, and you with them, so take full advantage of that. Second, do not go into your project with the mindset, “I have to fix something on the West Side.” Instead, find out what the people want and need, and go into your work with the attitude of, “This community is great, but this is going to make the community even better.” We promise you, changing your mindset in this way will make a world of difference.
