State Farm: I was involved in various types of legal research. I analyzed Kansas city ordinances and researched state laws regarding an up and coming mobile app project. Also, I created a policy brief regarding car sharing.
Community: At Prairie State Legal Services, I assisted the lawyers every Thursday with the “Lawyer in the Courtroom” project. I drafted legal documents in regards to divorces, child support, and closing letters. I was able to sit in on interviews and attend the Friday meetings where we discussed the cases.
Grant: Prairie State Legal Services provides an important service within the community by providing legal assistance and advice to people who cannot afford an attorney and are not familiar handling legal situations on their own. Many of our clients are in extreme situations and do not know where to turn after a ruling in court. Clients that are being evicted, being abused, or need help caring for children look to our lawyers asking, “What do I do now?” Instead of passerby advice they can most likely be forgotten, a reference manual can be extremely helpful to these people. It can direct them to nonprofits in town that can satisfy their various needs. With the $300 I am asking for, I can create the manual and mass produce it for current and future clients.
Message from Austin- “I would like to thank everyone who assisted me during my time with State Farm and Prairie State Legal Services. I am not going to name names because everyone in their own way added extraordinary value to my experience this summer.”
