As one of this year\u2019s recipients of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation\u2019s Re-Centering the Humanities grant, O&#8217;Connor regularly leads\u00a0a creative writing group at\u00a0the Addiction Recovery Center at Advocate BroMenn Medical Center in Normal, Illinois.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/news\/2014\/08-mellon-scholars-oconnor.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/news\/2014\/images\/08-oconnor-colleen-200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"238\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Colleen O&#8217;Connor &#8217;14<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u201cFor those with few resources, creative writing may provide a low-cost alternative for the management of persistent mental health disorders,\u201d said O\u2019Connor,\u00a0who studied both\u00a0Psychology and English-Writing at IWU. \u201cI was interested in investigating how creative writing can best be used as a low-cost supplementary aid or replacement for traditional therapy techniques.\u201d\u00a0She hopes to eventually integrate successful creative writing-based therapeutic designs\u00a0into the Illinois Institute for Addiction Recovery.<\/p>\n<p>Read the full article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iwu.edu\/news\/2014\/08-mellon-scholars-oconnor.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Colleen O&#8217;Connor &#8217;14 is currently investigating creative writing as an affordable mental health intervention.
