According to the Illinois Wesleyan chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, this award fosters and celebrates student research that \u201cengages, translates and bridges academic disciplines and\/or crosses traditional academic boundaries.\u201d Each applicant for this award submitted a research paper, either a senior seminar paper, honors research paper, or senior-level independent research paper; a work of art, music composition, film, collection of poetry or research that stemmed from experiential learning.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Phi Beta Kappa motto is\u00a0&#8220;Love of learning is the guide of life.&#8221; \u00a0My last four years at Illinois Wesleyan have taught me to strive to embody that message in everything that I do,\u201d said Carlson, a senior anthropology major from Galena, Ill.On Saturday, April 20, Sarah Carlson &#8217;13 and Maria Klingele &#8217;13 were presented the inaugural Phi Beta Kappa Liberal Arts Scholar Award at the 24th annual John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference luncheon. \u00a0According to the Illinois Wesleyan chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, this award fosters and celebrates student research that \u201cengages, translates and bridges academic disciplines and\/or crosses traditional academic boundaries.\u201d\u00a0 Each applicant for this award submitted a research paper, either a senior seminar paper, honors research paper, or senior-level independent research paper; a work of art, music composition, film, collection of poetry or research that stemmed from experiential learning.<\/p>\n<p>Carlson\u2019s paper explored the cultural significance of personal adornment for the Ilongot peoples of the Philippines, a project she began over the summer as an intern at The Field Museum in Chicago. Examining these ornaments also led her to an analysis of how the \u201chistorical context and racial climate of the collecting culture is an important component in understanding the stories these objects have to tell\u201d and the necessity for museums to practice \u201cactive engagement with members of the culture that produced the objects and with museum visitors to display the meanings that objects can communicate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/2013classnews\/files\/2013\/06\/04-student-klingele-maria-250.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-54\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.iwu.edu\/2013classnews\/files\/2013\/06\/04-student-klingele-maria-250.jpg\" alt=\"04-student-klingele-maria-250\" width=\"250\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Klingele, a senior French and francophone studies major from Glen Ellyn, Ill., analyzed Maryse\u00a0Cond\u00e9\u2019s autobiographical fiction\u00a0<em>Le c\u0153ur \u00e0 rire et \u00e0 pleurer<\/em>.\u00a0 The novel details Cond\u00e9\u2019s journey from childhood to adulthood and the societal contradictions she experienced living in both the Caribbean and Paris. In her paper, Klingele focused on Cond\u00e9\u2019s contributions to psychoanalytic theory, feminist literary criticism, and post-colonial theory in her rejection of the society&#8217;s discourse of the &#8220;Other.&#8221; Klingele argued that \u201cthrough rejecting these marginalizing theories, she inhibited\u00a0\u00e9criture f\u00e9minine, a revolutionary form of feminist writing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis research taught me about myself and I hope that others can benefit from the message that Maryse Cond\u00e9 conveys.\u00a0I think it relates to everyone as it discusses the multiple oppressions working within our society,\u201d Klingele said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday, April 20, Sarah Carlson \u201913 and Maria Klingele \u201913 were presented the inaugural Phi Beta Kappa Liberal Arts Scholar Award at the 24th annual John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference luncheon.
