Dirk Behrends ’87

Dirk Behrends ’87 has been promoted to vice president of association enterprise solutions at Abila. He has nearly 30 years’ experience in the association sector, spending his first 15 years working for some of the most influential professional societies in the U.S., most notably as the assistant director of the Young Lawyers Division of the American Bar Association. He joined Abila (formerly Avectra) in April of 2000 and has been instrumental in helping associations enhance member value and engagement. Behrends is a member of Association Forum and the American Society of Association Executives and currently serves on the Illinois Wesleyan University Alumni Association Board of Directors.

After 21 years as a scientist at The Dow Chemical Company, Carol (Gentry) Burns IWU ’85, has retired to consult independently on issues related to occupational health and agricultural exposures.  Her firm is Burns Epidemiology Consulting, LLC

Genda Freeman ’86

Genda Freeman ’86 and her family are going to be missionaries in Santa Cruz, Bolivia with South America Mission. They will be doing university student outreach among the more than 80,000 university students in the city of Santa Cruz as well as medical mission work among the rural indigenous populations.

Christopher Phillips ’81

Christopher Phillips ’81, Professor at the University of Cincinnati, will be speaking at an upcoming conference at ISU, Ex Parte Milligan at 150: The Constitution & Military Comissions in American Wars on Terror. The conference will be held September 22-24 at the Marriott. Professor Phillips will speak on Friday, September 23, on “Southern cross, North Star: Race, Region, and Irreconciliation in the Post-Civil War West.” He will also participate in a plenary panel: Lincoln, Civil Liberties, and the Milligan Decision.
