It’s a new environment that takes you out of the ordinary world and creates a place for a new kind of interaction.” (Photo by Robert Frank III ’14)

Phyllis (Lawhorn) Knighten ’85

phyllis knightenPhyllis (Lawhorn) Knighten ’85 received the Appreciation Award Pin from the Girl Scouts of Southern & Central NJ. The Appreciation Award is a National Award that recognizes an individual’s exemplary service in support of delivering the Girl Scout Leadership Experience.
Phyllis has been a volunteer with the Town & Country Service Unit and she has emphasized the ideals of Girl Scouting with her kindness and generosity. Being dedicated to the idea that all girls should have the opportunity to experience everything our council campsites have to offer, Phyllis started Winter Cabin Camping 7 years ago on Girl Scout Weekend and the  numbers of campers grow each year. Her camping weekend has become a Service Unit tradition that girls look forward to being able to attend, even as it began to include tent sites during warmer weather. Phyllis plans many camp activities so the girls have fun, helps girls learn the basics for camping, plans other camping events, and trains other leaders to camp on their own.  Phyllis embodies the spirit of Juliette Gordon Low and makes sure that the girls’ weekends are steeped in tradition and that is why she received the 2015 appreciation pin.
