Eric Gardner’s book _Black Print Unbound: The Christian Recorder, African American Literature, and Periodical Culture_ (Oxford UP 2015) has been named the winner of the 2017 Research Society for American Periodicals Book Prize, recognizing it as the best scholarly book published in 2015 and 2016 on American periodicals.
The award will be formally presented at the American Literature Association Annual Conference later this month. The prize committee said that _Black Print Unbound_ offers “magisterial vision and imaginative force that will set new standards for periodical scholarship.” The book, which was drafted with the support of a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities, is one of the first full-length studies of an early Black newspaper.
