She attended\u00a0Middlebury\u00a0College\u00a0as a young woman in 1955 but graduated from\u00a0Illinois\u00a0Wesleyan\u00a0University\u00a0with a BA in English Literature in 1976.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">She married James Denise McGowan on July 3, 1958, at\u00a0Fort Devens,\u00a0Massachusetts. Jim, a former professor at IWU, predeceased her by one year to the day. They are survived by their three children, Andrew John (Laura) McGowan,\u00a0Topeka,\u00a0KS; Caitlin (Anthony) Visser,\u00a0Las Vegas,\u00a0NV; and Michael James McGowan,\u00a0Durham,\u00a0NC, and three grandsons, Benjamin, Joseph, and Eric Visser,\u00a0Las Vegas,\u00a0NV.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Anne was a modern dancer as a young woman. She taught Latin at local high schools for several years, but she is\u00a0known primarily as an environmentalist. She was a volunteer at Operation Recycle\u2019s first recycle drive in 1971 and later served on its board for many years. She was the original director of the\u00a0<em>Ecology\u00a0Action\u00a0Center<\/em>, an environmental education center that began in 1994.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Memorials may be made to the\u00a0<em>Ecology\u00a0Action\u00a0Center<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">A celebration of her life will be held at a later date.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Anne Weston McGowan, of\u00a0Normal, breathed her last at 8:55 a.m. Saturday, March 7, 2015. \u00a0 She was born on August 12, 1937, in\u00a0Brooklyn,\u00a0New York, the only child of Harold and Frances Weston.
