Robert Moore ’64 died June 29, 2021, in Modesto, California. He was 79. Bob became the first member of his family to earn a four-year college degree when he graduated from Illinois Wesleyan. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving in an artillery division. He returned to his hometown of Streator, Illinois, and soon married his wife. Bob embarked on a career as a claims administrator with the Social Security Administration, and the Moores soon began a family in Helena, Montana, where they lived the majority of their adult lives. Bob loved bowling, golf, chess and card games with family and friends. He loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, rarely missing important events in their lives. He is survived by three children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. You can view his obituary here.
Barbara (Wood) Salter ’63
Barbara (Wood) Salter ’63 died June 15, 2021. She was 80. Barbara met her future husband Ronald Salter ’62 during her time at Illinois Wesleyan. They soon moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Ron took a position with Fahlgren and Associates advertising agency. In 1980, Barbara and Ron established Salter and Associates, LLC, a marketing and advertising service. Barbara was active in her community, having served as a member of Kappa Kappa Society and two terms as president of the Junior League of Parkersburg. She was chair of the Parkersburg Area Municipal Planning Commission, a member of the Wood County Senior Citizens Board of Directors, and attended Wayside United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, two sons, a granddaughter, and many cousins and extended family members.

Frances (Bennett) Smith ’67
We are saddened to share that Frances (Bennett) Smith ’67 of Hillsboro, Oregon, died June 6, 2021. Frances earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Illinois before coming to Illinois Wesleyan to earn a Master’s Degree in biology. She taught science classes at Mascoutah High School, Mascoutah, IL before owning and operating The Sewing Nook on Mascoutah’s Main Street for over 25 years. Susan Jean Vanek Mackoway ’69
We are sorry to share that Susan Jean Vanek Mackoway ’69 died March 28, 2021 in Peoria, Illinois. Susan was 73. She earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing at Illinois Wesleyan, where she was an active member of Alpha Tau Delta. Susan worked in pediatrics at Methodist Medical Center in Peoria. She was a member of St Patrick’s Catholic Church in Washington, Il. In retirement she enjoyed spending time with her family . She is survived by three children, including Debra Mackoway Bluestein ’94, and eight grandchildren.

James Proctor Brown III ’62
James Proctor Brown III ’62 passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at the age of 80 in Norfolk, Virginia. Born in Reedsburg, WI, Jim was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and Indiana University. He served in the Peace Corps, teaching in Nigeria (1962-1964) and was a History Professor at Norfolk State University for 40 years (1968-2008) where he taught African and world history. Everything was an educational opportunity in Jim’s eyes, and he spent his life sharing his experiences. He believed that we are all connected, and that we should support and respect each other. Bob Ward ’60 was showcased as one of three local artists who who seized the opportunity to reach within themselves and use their talents to create artwork. His work was featured in the Union Museum of Art and History exhibit, titled Art in the Time of Coronavirus. William Tolson ’62
William Tolson ’62 of San Francisco died April 13, 2021. He was 80. Bill was active in Sigma Chi at Illinois Wesleyan. He enjoyed a successful banking career that allowed him to retire early and spend time with his family, which included a two-month trip around the world. He made many lifelong friendships through memberships in Rotary Club and The Family. He celebrated life as a longtime San Francisco resident hosting dinner parties, rooting for the Giants and the 49ers, and taking in the view of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay from his home on Russian Hill. He enjoyed time spent with his wife, was a devoted father to his children, and cherished time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, five children, two granddaughters, and a brother, Joseph Tolson ’56. Find the full obituary here.
