Ralph Sackett ’60

Ralph Sackett ’60 died Aug. 18, 2021. He was 83. Ralph was a talented athlete who was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles out of high school, but instead chose to attend Illinois Wesleyan thanks to encouragement from a benefactor, the late Dale McMackin ’36. He helped Ralph obtain a full scholarship, meal-work exchange and housing, allowing Ralph to become the first member of his family to attend and graduate from college. Ralph met his future wife Alicia (Westwood) Sackett ’60 during his time at IWU. After graduation, he coached the Bloomington Bobcats baseball team while earning a master’s degree in mathematics at Illinois State University. He later coached at four Illinois high schools and Washington University in St. Louis, but started a new career in 1975 with Bloomington Federal Savings & Loan. Ever versatile, he later added real estate development to his resume. Ralph enjoyed golfing, fishing and cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals. He and Alicia loved spending time in Naples, Florida, and at their cabin in Lake Napowan, Wisconsin. He is survived by his wife, four children, 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Thomas Hageman ’64

Thomas Hageman ’64 passed away peacefully on June 30th 2021 at JourneyCare in Barrington, Illinois. A graduate of Danville High School, Tom went on to complete his Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education at Illinois Wesleyan University. He began his teaching career in Wheeling-Buffalo Grove, School District 21 where he started a grade school orchestra program. Robert Moore ’64

Robert Moore ’64 died June 29, 2021, in Modesto, California. He was 79. Bob became the first member of his family to earn a four-year college degree when he graduated from Illinois Wesleyan. He later served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving in an artillery division. He returned to his hometown of Streator, Illinois, and soon married his wife. Bob embarked on a career as a claims administrator with the Social Security Administration, and the Moores soon began a family in Helena, Montana, where they lived the majority of their adult lives. Bob loved bowling, golf, chess and card games with family and friends. He loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, rarely missing important events in their lives. He is survived by three children, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, a sister, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. You can view his obituary here.

Barbara (Wood) Salter ’63

Barbara (Wood) Salter ’63 died June 15, 2021. She was 80. Barbara met her future husband Ronald Salter ’62 during her time at Illinois Wesleyan. They soon moved to Parkersburg, West Virginia, where Ron took a position with Fahlgren and Associates advertising agency. In 1980, Barbara and Ron established Salter and Associates, LLC, a marketing and advertising service. Barbara was active in her community, having served as a member of Kappa Kappa Society and two terms as president of the Junior League of Parkersburg. She was chair of the Parkersburg Area Municipal Planning Commission, a member of the Wood County Senior Citizens Board of Directors, and attended Wayside United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, two sons, a granddaughter, and many cousins and extended family members.

James Proctor Brown III ’62

James Proctor Brown III ’62 passed away on Monday, January 4, 2021 at the age of 80 in Norfolk, Virginia. Born in Reedsburg, WI, Jim was a graduate of Illinois Wesleyan University and Indiana University. He served in the Peace Corps, teaching in Nigeria (1962-1964) and was a History Professor at Norfolk State University for 40 years (1968-2008) where he taught African and world history. Everything was an educational opportunity in Jim’s eyes, and he spent his life sharing his experiences. He believed that we are all connected, and that we should support and respect each other. Stanley Cade ’67

Stanley Cade ’67 died March 23, 2021, in Herrin, Illinois. He was 75. Stanley earned a bachelor’s degree in music at Illinois Wesleyan and a master’s degree in education from Northern Illinois University. He taught music for over 40 years, including concert, marching and jazz bands, and choral music, in the Illinois communities of Toluca, Morris, St. Anne, Mooseheart and Chicago Heights, as well as Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He also taught private lessons for many years and played trombone with the Batavia (Ill.) Community Band. William Tolson ’62

William Tolson ’62 of San Francisco died April 13, 2021. He was 80. Bill was active in Sigma Chi at Illinois Wesleyan. He enjoyed a successful banking career that allowed him to retire early and spend time with his family, which included a two-month trip around the world. He made many lifelong friendships through memberships in Rotary Club and The Family. He celebrated life as a longtime San Francisco resident hosting dinner parties, rooting for the Giants and the 49ers, and taking in the view of Alcatraz and the San Francisco Bay from his home on Russian Hill. He enjoyed time spent with his wife, was a devoted father to his children, and cherished time with his grandchildren. Sharon (McIntyre) Keene ’61

Sharon (McIntyre) Keene ’61 of Sierra Vista, Arizona, died March 22, 2021. She was 81. Sharon studied sacred music at Illinois Wesleyan and taught high school choral music in Harvard, Illinois, for 25 of her 30 years in teaching. Under her leadership, Harvard High School’s music department won eight state championships. Upon retirement, she and her husband moved to Sierra Vista, where she volunteered as director of the Sierra Vista Community Chorus and served as choir director at Faith Presbyterian Church. She had previously served as choir director for 30 years at First Presbyterian Church in Harvard. Music was always an important part of Sharon’s life, second only to her family. She is survived by her husband Edwin Keene ’61, four children, including Christopher Keene ’91, six grandchildren, and three foreign exchange children.

Constance “Connie” (Popovich) Pavich ’60

Constance “Connie” (Popovich) Pavich ’60 died Jan. 28. 2021. She was 84. Connie studied art at Illinois Wesleyan and became a junior high art teacher. She painted and participated in art shows, and she sold many of her works over the years. Connie met her future husband at a Serbian basketball tournament in Milwaukee. They soon married and started a family. Connie was a dedicated homemaker who regularly hosted dinner parties where Serbian music was always playing in the background. She was a highly regarded cook who enjoyed sharing recipes. She liked working with her hands and was known by the many employees at her local Ace Hardware store. She also enjoyed technology; after buying her first computer in the late 1970s, she took computer courses and conducted video calls with family before they became commonplace. Connie read two newspapers and completed the crossword, jumble and word search puzzles in both every day. She was a dedicated fan of the Chicago Cubs and took great pleasure in the team’s World Series victory in 2016. Connie most enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, with whom she spent many hours doing art projects.
