Got Concerns?
Apr 19th, 2007 by Paul Lazoen
Still have a concern that you want to see addressed even though Student Senate is out for the rest of the year? If so post your concerns on here. Please remember that these are about concerns you have relating to Wesleyan.
There needs to be tighter restrictions on the group study rooms in Ames because despite the signs on the doors people still go in there alone and leave there things in the rooms unattended. Its so annoying, maybe have the people monitoring put them out if they are alone and remove things that remain unattended.
I agree completely. People think that they can just leave their books on the tables, go to saga, stop for coffee, take a nap, and then return to their room. The building aides at Ames walk around the entire building twice an hour, and it wouldn’t be hard to ask single people to leave or move items out of the rooms if they are left in there alone.
It is great to see students using this venue to share concerns!
Library staff and faculty share your concerns about study rooms and welcome additional conversation with you about these spaces. We greatly appreciated insights provided earlier this year by Student Senate members, who helped us create the signs currently posted. In those conversations, we heard a variety of compelling and contrasting points of view. Because of that, it isn’t a simple answer for us to have Building Aides ask people to leave or to physically remove items that are unattended. Doing so would not necessarily solve the situation and would raise other concerns, so we continue to seek creative solutions. On evenings and weekends, in particular, staff members are aware of open rooms and can assist you in knowing about options.
We anticipate and welcome the continuation of this conversation and encourage students to talk together and with us about ways to move forward. Please feel free to approach any library staff or faculty member for assistance meeting immediate needs or to share comments or suggestions. I can be reached directly at kvogel at iwu.edu or x3576. We welcome your perspective on ways to improve the library environment and all services to meet your needs.

one of the big things that struck me when i came to wesleyan are all the styrofoam containers that are used at tommys. it’s a well-known fact that styrofoam isnt biodegradable and yet we toss out TONS of it everyday!!! is there a reason why we dont use anything more environment-friendly on a campus that holds sustainability to such great importance?
Mallow…
Let me disagree….
I know that we are not a big campus, but one thing I wish would take place is a 24 hour transportation system. Bigger schools that my friends attend have buses that take them to nearby restaurants, malls, doctors, etc. What I would most likely want to see it used as is a desginated driver to get home from bars. I couldn’t tell you how many responsible students resort to getting into cars with people who have been drinking or driving themselves because there is no affordable means to get home. And sometimes taxis are so sparce that it is impossible to get one at late hours. At northern, it is called the drunk bus, but it would not have to have such a negative connotation. We could just make it a 24 hour local transportation system.
I agree with Anonymous above me. At ISU, their student ID gives them access to all of the Bloomington-Normal busses. This seems like something that could be easily done for IWU students. This would allow students without cars to be able to get off of campus to volunteer, work, etc. in addition to providing safe transportation.
